LANGUAGE ARTS

Writing Foundations

Grades: 5-8

In this foundational class, reluctant and beginning writers, in addition to writers who are not quite ready for the rigors of writing essays, or writers who need more independent practice will learn essential writing skills and components in careful order: from parts of speech, to sentence structure, to paragraph construction.
Some of the goals of this class are to help the students feel comfortable with the process of writing and to ensure that they have a solid understanding of sentence construction and paragraph organization. By the end of the school year, students will be writing well-constructed expository paragraphs. In addition, editing skills will be taught and reinforced throughout the year. Content for this course comes from a variety of curricula including, but not limited to, IEW’s Fix-It-Grammar series and the EPS (Educators Publishing Service) Writing Skills curriculum.

Creative Writing

Grades: 9-12

Students will develop fiction-writing skills, including: building scenes; developing conflict; point of view; writing dialogue; describing setting and characters; critiquing; and more. Even if students have completed this course before, they are welcome to take the class again because they can choose different topics or themes to write about, and can build on the skills they’ve already learned.

Literature

Text: Illuminating Literature: When Worlds Collide by Sharon Watson
Using the text written from a Christian perspective, students will become knowledgeable and discerning readers, as they learn literary terms and gain an appreciation of fine literature. When they learn how authors craft stories, they understand how authors can influence minds and mold hearts. We will read, study, and discuss eight novels chosen for their colliding worlds, literary value and potential to help students make choices from a godly perspective.

Adventures in Literature

Grades: 3-6
Instructor: Teresa Thorne 
Class Fee: $35/year
Class Time: 1½ hours
This class will foster a love of literature as students read The Borrowers by Mary Norton, The Magician’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis, and Ben and Me by Robert Lawson. Class time will include a read aloud period and completion of a variety of related activities. Subjects incorporated will vary from class to class and will include language arts, social studies, science, and the arts. Additional activities will be provided for students to take home and complete. These activities can be modified to suit students’ specific needs and abilities. (No reading outside of class is required.) Students will not receive grades for the class, but if requested, feedback regarding a student’s participation in class will be provided. There is no strict age/grade requirement, but students should possess at least 2nd grade reading and writing abilities and be able to sit through a read aloud period of 20 minutes so they can get as much as possible out of the class. All supplies for the class will be provided except for students’ personal copies of the novels. (Personal copies are recommended for completing assignments at home, but are not required.)

SOCIAL STUDIES

American History

America the Beautiful by Charlene Notgrass is a one-year American history designed for students in grades sixth to eighth. Daily lessons guide your child chronologically through American history, highlighting key events, people, and places. 

Modernity: World History

Grades: 8-12

Co-op Subscription Cost: $60 per login
This course will be using the online co-op subscription for Compass Classroom Modernity World History covering explores world history from 1500 to the present. The course includes online video lectures by master storyteller Dave Raymond. Raymond applies a Christian worldview to the characters, events, theology, literature, art, and religious beliefs of the nation. Each week will include video lectures, readings, in class discussions and portfolio projects. We will need to purchase the co-op online subscription together, so the subscription fee will be collected by the teacher to place the group order.

Earth and Space Science

The Earth and Space course will include the subject matter of geology, water, atmosphere, weather, solar system, astronomy, and conclude with environmental science.  The class format will involve reading the textbook at home, in class lectures of chapter highlights, activities and labs to emphasize the concepts.

Chemistry

This course is intended to be a first-year high school chemistry course. If successfully completed, students will receive a strong background in chemistry that will prepare them for a follow-up chemistry course in college. This course has a significant lab component. Students need to have completed Algebra 1 in order to take this course.

Physical Science

Lab Manual: Science Matter and Energy Laboratory Manual by Abeka
Topics covered are Scientific method, measuring matter, states of matter, energy, heat, compounds and mixtures, molecules, motions and forces, waves, sounds, light, electrostatics, magnetism, electricity, foundations of electronics and foundations of chemistry. Students will need Abeka Science – Matter and Energy textbook and the Lab Manual. The hour class will be to cover the lab only. All assignment; including reading, quizzes and tests are done at home and turned in for grading. Upon completing this class students will receive a science with a lab for High School credit.

Students will learn about different artists throughout history. Through creativity and imagination students will experience different art styles and techniques used to create artwork. Students will have the option to create two group projects that will be sponsored at Carroll Arts Center. 

Advanced Art

This class is for high school students who are serious about art. Students will explore a variety of mediums, such as watercolor, acrylic paint, ArtResin, papier-mâché, clay and wire.

Using Answers In Genesis texts, students will learn that science and history always point to our creator. High School Drama

Students will be introduced to theater arts. They will build confidence, learn trust in the abilities God has given them, and the value of teamwork. Students will learn concepts of theater and acting through games and activities. Students will exhibit their skills through group and individual presentations. 

Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition class will include the study of the various systems of the body, disease states and how nutrition impacts those systems.  The course will examine all aspects of health as the textbook mentions, “health is the pursuit of balance physically, socially, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.”  The class format is reading the lesson chapter at home, class lecture of the chapter highlights, in class activities, food lab and general labs to emphasize the concepts.

Intermediate Level Sewing

Grades: 6-12

This class is designed for serious sewers who are interested in gaining new skills. Students will be learning seam finishes and more advanced clothing construction. Students will be selecting their own projects under the teacher’s guidance. Students will learn how to read patterns, select appropriate fabrics and how to fit patterns to their bodies. Classes will be kept small to provide more one on one instruction.  Students will be responsible for providing their own fabric and various notions for each project.

WordPress is the most popular content management system on the internet for building websites. Learn the basics of WordPress and create your own website.

Crochet Club  (all year)

Supplies: HOOK 5mm crochet hook preferably metal. My fav brand is Loop & Thread that can be found at Michels. In that brand the 5mm hook is gold. YARN Medium weight number 4 (the number is on the back of the label) any color My fav brand is Big Twist Value but you can only find it at JOANN fabrics. This is a great starter yarn.
We will learn the basic stitches and techniques to crochet and complete a few projects. Beginner friendly, and experienced crocheters are also welcome. If you knit and just want to be social you can also join but knitting instruction will not be given.
